Pre-Declared Relocation

Say up front that you will move at your own cost. It removes the reason they were about to skip you.

In short

A hiring manager looking at an out-of-area applicant makes several silent assumptions: they will want relocation costs, they might not come, they will take months to start. Answering all three in the first two lines removes the objection before it forms.

The situation

A manager in Manchester reviews applications. One is from someone in Lisbon.

The thought is immediate and largely unexamined: relocation package, visa questions, three-month start date, and a real chance they accept and then change their mind.

It goes into the maybe pile. The maybe pile is not reviewed again.

The candidate was never assessed on ability. A set of assumptions about logistics decided it, and nobody ever said so.

Why this works

Distance is not usually rejected for the reason candidates assume. Managers are not prejudiced against people from elsewhere; they are avoiding a specific set of costs and risks.

Those risks are concrete: relocation expenses that require approval they may not have, a long notice-to-start period, the possibility the candidate withdraws once the practical realities land, and administrative complexity around residence or right to work.

Each of those is answerable, and none of them is usually asked about. The manager forms the assumption silently and acts on it, so the candidate never gets the chance to address it.

Pre-declaring inverts that. Stating plainly that you will relocate at your own cost, that you have the right to work, and that you can start within a defined period removes every element of the silent objection in about three lines.

It also signals something useful about commitment. Someone who has thought through the logistics and is willing to bear the cost is demonstrably serious about that specific role, which distinguishes them from applicants casting broadly.

The one caution is honesty. If you cannot actually afford to move, or your right to work is unresolved, saying otherwise creates a much worse problem at offer stage.

How to run it

  1. 1

State it in the first three lines

Not in a closing paragraph. The assumption forms while they read the address, so the answer has to arrive immediately.

  2. 2

    Be explicit about cost

"At my own cost" removes the budget question entirely, which is frequently the element the manager has least authority over.

  3. 3

    Give a specific start date

"Available from 1 March" beats "flexible". A date lets them plan; vagueness reads as uncertainty.

  4. 4

    Address right to work directly

If you already hold it, say so immediately. If you need sponsorship, that is a different conversation and should be equally clear.

  5. 5

    Explain why this place, briefly

One sentence on why you are moving makes it credible. Unexplained relocation invites doubt about whether you will stay.

  6. 6

Offer to interview on their terms

Saying you will travel at your own expense for a final interview reinforces that the commitment is real.

What to say

Copy, then make it yours
Hi Ms Whitfield, I'm applying for the mechanical engineer role. I'm currently in Porto and I want to deal with the practicalities up front. I'm relocating to Manchester regardless of this role — my partner started at the university there in September — so the move is happening with or without the job. I'd be covering the relocation myself and I'm not asking for any package. I hold a settled status visa, so there's no sponsorship requirement, and I can start within four weeks of an offer. I'm happy to travel over at my own expense for interviews at whatever notice suits you. Details of the pressure-vessel work in my CV. Glad to discuss. — Tiago

When it does not work

  • Promising a move you cannot fund. Relocation is expensive. Committing and then asking for help at offer stage damages trust badly.
  • Unresolved right to work. Pre-declaring relocation does not solve sponsorship. If you need it, say so plainly rather than obscuring it.
  • Unexplained moves. A relocation with no stated reason invites doubt about whether you will stay past the first year.
  • Overcommitting on timing. Give a date you can actually meet, accounting for notice periods, housing and any visa processing.
  • Some roles genuinely require presence sooner. Certain operational roles cannot wait for a move, whatever you commit to.
The takeaway

You are not being rejected for living elsewhere. You are being rejected for a set of assumptions nobody voiced — so answer them before they form.

Questions

Why does stating this so early matter?

Because the assumption forms while the manager reads your address, before they reach any explanation. If your relocation commitment appears in a closing paragraph, the decision has frequently already been made and the application is in the maybe pile. Putting it in the first three lines means the objection is answered at the moment it would otherwise arise, which is the entire mechanism. Position matters more here than wording.

Should I offer to relocate at my own cost even if I would prefer help?

Only if it is true, because retracting it at offer stage damages trust seriously and can lose the role. Relocation is genuinely expensive and there is no shame in needing support. If you do, the stronger approach is being clear about timing and commitment while leaving the cost question for negotiation, rather than promising something you cannot fund. Many employers will discuss relocation support for a candidate they want.

Does this help if I need visa sponsorship?

It helps with the other objections but does not address sponsorship, which is a separate and larger question. Pre-declaring relocation removes concerns about cost, timing and commitment; it does not remove the legal requirement for an employer to hold a sponsor licence and for the role to meet the relevant thresholds. If you need sponsorship, say so equally plainly and early, and target employers who are licensed to provide it.

Why does explaining my reason for moving matter?

Because an unexplained relocation invites a specific doubt: whether you will still be there in a year. Managers have seen people move for a job, find the new city unfamiliar and leave within months. A single sentence giving a concrete reason — a partner's work, family, an existing connection to the area — makes the move read as settled rather than speculative, and removes a retention concern that would otherwise sit unaddressed.
