The Renege Window
Every year, freshers accept offers and never turn up. The seats they leave behind get refilled quietly in spring.
In short
Companies that hire graduates plan for a certain number of joiners, and every year a share of those who accepted offers back out — they take a better offer, go for higher studies or simply do not show up on joining day. The replacements are hired fast, off-cycle, often without a campus process and with far less competition than the main recruiting season. Knowing when those seats reappear is one of the least-known timing advantages open to freshers.
The situation
In October, a company makes forty graduate offers across three colleges. Everyone celebrates. The recruiting team closes the season.
By April, six of those forty have written to say they are going for a master's degree. Four more accepted a better offer elsewhere. On joining day in July, three simply do not appear.
Thirteen empty seats, a training batch that starts in three weeks, and a hiring manager who planned their quarter around forty new engineers.
Nobody runs a campus drive in April. The seats are filled from referrals, a short off-campus posting and whoever happens to have written in recently. The main season had thousands of applicants. This one has a few dozen.
Why this works
Graduate hiring runs on a calendar. The main season, when most applications arrive, is also when competition is at its highest. Once offers are made, recruiting teams stand down, and most candidates who missed out assume the door is closed until next year.
But every graduate intake leaks. Some people who accept offers are holding several; some get admission to postgraduate programmes; some change their minds about the city or the role. Employers know this and over-hire to compensate, but the numbers never land exactly, and the gaps show up in a predictable window — typically in the months before joining dates, when final admissions and competing offers resolve.
When a seat reopens that late, the company is optimising for speed rather than breadth. The training batch has a start date, the manager has a headcount plan, and running a fresh campus process is out of the question. They fill it from whoever is easiest to reach: referrals, a brief off-campus posting, and candidates who have recently shown interest.
That last group is where you can place yourself deliberately. A fresher who wrote in during the quiet months, with a clear message and a relevant project, is already in the recruiter's inbox when the gap appears.
How to run it
- 1
List companies with fixed graduate intakes
Look for employers that hire freshers in batches with a common joining date or training programme — IT services firms, consultancies, banks, large product companies. Batch hiring is what creates the renege pattern.
- 2
Find out when their batches join
Joining dates are often mentioned in offer letters shared online, alumni posts and forum threads. Work back two to four months from those dates: that is when late dropouts surface.
- 3
Write to campus recruiters before the window
Contact the campus or early-careers recruiter one to three months ahead of the joining date. Say you are available to join the upcoming batch at short notice if any seats reopen.
- 4
Lead with availability and a proof point
The two things that matter in a late fill are that you can start on the batch date and that you are obviously capable. State your graduation status, your earliest joining date and one relevant project.
- 5
Watch for short off-campus postings
Late fills are often posted briefly as 'urgent', 'immediate joiners' or 'off-campus drive' and closed within days. Check target companies' careers pages weekly during the window.
- 6
Follow up once near the joining date
Two or three weeks before the batch starts, send a one-line note restating that you can join immediately. That is often when the final no-shows become known.
What to say
When it does not work
- Writing after the batch has started. Once training begins, late joiners are much harder to absorb. The window is before the joining date, not after it.
- Implying you know about dropouts. Do not claim inside knowledge of reneges. Simply say you are available if seats open — recruiters will read the timing for themselves.
- Being unavailable when the call comes. Late fills move in days. If you cannot join on the batch date or produce your documents quickly, the seat goes to the next person.
- Only targeting famous brands. The biggest names get the most late applicants too. Mid-size employers with batch intakes are often where these seats go unfilled longest.
- Treating it as a guaranteed backdoor. Some years a company over-hires enough to absorb every dropout. Run this alongside other strategies, not instead of them.
The main hiring season is the busiest moment of the year. The seats that reopen months later are filled by whoever is already in the inbox and ready to start.
Questions
Why do companies not just hire extra people to cover dropouts?
Many do, but the estimate is never exact. Some years more people back out than expected, and some teams cannot absorb extra hires in advance. The result is a set of gaps that appear late, close to the joining date, which is exactly when running a full recruitment process is least practical.
Is this only relevant in countries with campus placements?
It is most visible where graduates join in batches, which includes campus placement systems and graduate schemes with a common start date. But the underlying pattern — accepted offers that do not convert — exists almost everywhere entry-level hiring is done in cohorts, including internships that convert to graduate roles.
How do I find the right recruiter to contact?
Look for titles such as campus recruiter, university relations, early careers or graduate recruitment at the company. Alumni who joined the previous batch can usually tell you who ran their hiring. A named person is far better than a general careers inbox.
Should I mention that I did not get placed on campus?
You do not need to dwell on it. A brief, matter-of-fact line is fine if it explains why you are available. Spend the rest of the message on what you can do and when you can start — that is what the recruiter is filling the seat for.
