The Borrowed Campus
Your college is not on their list. Another college's placement drive may still let you walk in.
In short
Many employers only visit a handful of colleges, which quietly excludes most students. But recruitment drives are frequently open to more people than their host college: pooled drives invite students from several institutions, some colleges admit external candidates, and employers run off-campus drives listed through university career portals and state skill agencies. Finding and attending these borrowed campuses puts you in the same room as recruiters who would never have visited your own college.
The situation
A student at a small engineering college watches placement season pass. The big recruiters visit three colleges in the city. His is not one of them. His college's own drives bring a handful of companies, mostly offering roles he does not want.
In February, a friend at another college mentions that their placement cell is hosting a pooled drive for a large IT services firm. It is open to final-year students from eleven colleges in the region, including his.
Nobody at his college saw the notice. It went to a placement officer's inbox and was never forwarded.
He registers, travels forty minutes on the day, and sits the test with four hundred other students. By the evening he has cleared two rounds with a company that had never once visited his campus.
Why this works
Campus recruitment concentrates opportunity. Employers visit the colleges that have historically produced strong hires, and students elsewhere are left to compete through crowded online portals where their applications are easy to ignore.
But the boundaries are more porous than they look. Recruiters regularly run pooled drives that invite students from several colleges at once, because it is more efficient than visiting each one. Some colleges open their drives to external candidates. Employers also run off-campus drives advertised through university career portals, state employment or skill-development agencies, and job fairs organised by other institutions.
These drives suffer from poor distribution. Notices travel through placement officers, notice boards and student groups at the host college, and they often never reach the students who would most benefit. The result is a strangely under-filled room: an employer ready to test and interview hundreds of candidates, and a pool limited mostly to whoever happened to hear about it.
Once you are in that room, your college name matters much less. You sit the same test and face the same interviewers as everyone else, and the drive is designed to hire on the day.
How to run it
- 1
Make friends with other colleges' placement news
Join student groups, alumni networks and placement channels from nearby colleges. Ask friends elsewhere to forward drive notices. Most pooled-drive information travels this way.
- 2
Check open drives on official portals
Look at university career portals, state employment and skill-development agency sites, and national job portals that list campus and off-campus drives. Many explicitly accept students from multiple colleges.
- 3
Read the eligibility line first
Drives specify eligible colleges, degrees, graduation years and academic cut-offs. Confirm you qualify before registering — turning up ineligible wastes everyone's day.
- 4
Ask your own placement officer directly
Placement officers often receive pooled-drive invitations and simply do not publicise them widely. Asking specifically whether your college is part of any pooled drives can surface several.
- 5
Prepare for a one-day hiring process
Drives often run the test, group discussion and interviews on the same day. Prepare your documents, printed resumes and aptitude practice in advance.
- 6
Treat the day like a full interview
Arrive early, dress for the interview and stay until the end. Some drives shortlist in the evening, and candidates who leave early miss the final round.
What to say
When it does not work
- Turning up without confirming eligibility. Host colleges and employers check lists. Arriving uninvited to a closed drive can get you turned away and reflects badly on your college.
- Missing registration deadlines. Pooled drives often close registration days before the event. By the time notices spread informally, the window may already be shut.
- Arriving unprepared for a same-day process. Missing documents, no printed resume or no aptitude practice can end your day in the first round.
- Only chasing the biggest brand. Popular drives are packed. Smaller employers' pooled drives often have fewer candidates and more offers per head.
- Relying only on word of mouth. Informal networks are useful but unreliable. Check official portals and ask placement officers directly as well.
Your college's placement list decides where recruiters go. It does not decide where you can go — and many drives are open to anyone who hears about them in time.
Questions
What is a pooled campus drive?
It is a recruitment drive where an employer tests and interviews students from several colleges at one venue, usually hosted by one of those colleges. It saves the employer from visiting each institution separately. Eligibility is normally defined by a list of participating colleges, degrees and graduation years.
Can I attend another college's drive if my college is not listed?
Usually not for a closed drive. Some drives are explicitly open to any eligible student in a region or state, and others admit external candidates on request. Always check the notice or ask the host placement office before travelling — never assume you can walk in.
Is this only relevant in India?
Pooled campus drives are especially common in India, but the idea applies elsewhere too. University career fairs, regional graduate recruitment events and employer open days are often open to students from other institutions. The advantage is the same: access to recruiters who would never have visited your own campus.
How do I hear about these drives earlier?
Build a small network of contacts at other colleges, join their placement and alumni groups, check state and national employment portals regularly, and ask your own placement officer which pooled drives your college has been invited to. Information travels slowly, so being early matters.
