India Resume Format — How to Write an Indian Resume

Indian resumes are one to two pages, commonly include a short personal details block, and are expected to state notice period and current/expected CTC for experienced roles. This guide covers the Indian standard, what ATS platforms used by Indian employers parse, fresher and B.Tech resume structure, off-campus and mass-recruiter formats, Naukri profile optimisation, and role guidance for software engineers, data scientists, finance, marketing, managers and experienced professionals.

The Indian resume standard

India has its own conventions, and several of them are the exact opposite of what a US resume requires.

Rule Indian standard
Name Resume (CV is sometimes used interchangeably)
Length One page for freshers, two for experienced professionals
Photo Optional — common in some sectors, unnecessary in IT
Personal details A short block is conventional: location, languages, sometimes DOB
Notice period Expected for experienced candidates — recruiters screen on it
CTC Current and expected CTC are commonly asked, often in the application rather than the resume
Opening A short professional summary, or career objective for freshers
Order Summary → Skills → Experience → Education → Projects → Certifications

Important: if you are applying to roles outside India, remove the personal details block, the photo, DOB, CTC and notice period. Those conventions are normal in India and actively harmful on a US, UK or Canadian application.

ATS formatting for Indian employers

Indian employers use Workday, SuccessFactors, Taleo, Naukri RMS, Darwinbox and Zoho Recruit, plus large in-house systems at IT services firms.

  • Single column, no text boxes or content tables
  • Standard headings, consistent MM/YYYY dates
  • Skills section with exact technology names — Indian IT screening is heavily keyword-matched
  • Text-based PDF or .docx

Freshers and B.Tech students

  • Education first, with CGPA or percentage, and 10th/12th marks where campus processes require them
  • Projects are your experience. Two to four, each with the problem, your stack, your specific contribution and the outcome
  • Internships with real duties, not just the company name
  • Certifications that are relevant, not a list of every course completed
  • One page. A three-page fresher resume reads as padding

Off-campus drives and mass recruiters

High-volume recruiters (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, Accenture) screen mechanically before any human reads your resume.

  • Match the exact eligibility criteria — degree, stream, year, CGPA cut-off, backlog rules
  • Use the exact technology names from the posting
  • Keep formatting extremely plain — single column, standard headings, no graphics
  • Keep marks, dates and gaps consistent with what you will enter in the application form; mismatches are a common rejection cause
  • Name the role you are applying for; generic resumes fare badly in bulk screening

Naukri profile optimisation

For most Indian roles, your Naukri profile is screened as often as your resume.

  • Headline should read like a job title plus stack, not a slogan
  • Keep the key skills list accurate and current — recruiter searches match on it directly
  • Update regularly. Naukri surfaces recently active profiles more prominently, and a stale profile signals you are not looking
  • Keep notice period, current and expected CTC, and location preference filled in and truthful — recruiters filter on all four
  • Ensure the uploaded resume matches the profile; contradictions get flagged

Role-specific guidance

Software engineer — Exact stack names in Skills. Quantify scale. For product companies, emphasise systems owned; for services companies, emphasise breadth, client context and delivery.

Data scientist — Separate languages and libraries from techniques. State business outcomes. Include deployment work, which is often what distinguishes candidates.

Finance — CA, CFA, CMA status high, including cleared stages. Name ERP systems (SAP, Tally, Oracle) and note statutory and GST exposure.

Marketing — Campaign metrics with real numbers, plus tools. Digital marketing roles are screened on named platforms — match them.

Manager — Team size, delivery scope, budget, and client-facing responsibility.

Experienced professional — Lead with a strong summary, keep notice period visible, and quantify. Recruiters filter on notice period early, so a shorter or negotiable one is worth stating.

B.Tech student — See the fresher guidance above; projects carry the weight.

Frequently asked questions

One page, education first with CGPA or percentage, then projects, internships, skills and certifications. Projects are the most important section because they stand in for work experience — include two to four, each stating the problem, your stack, your specific contribution and the outcome. Include 10th and 12th marks where campus processes require them. Keep formatting plain and single column, since campus and off-campus screening is mechanical before any human reads it.

It depends entirely on where you are applying. Within India, a short personal details block is conventional, a photo is common in some sectors though unnecessary in IT, and notice period and CTC are routinely expected for experienced roles. If you are applying to jobs outside India — the US, UK, Canada, Australia or Europe — remove all of it. Photos, date of birth, marital status and salary details are inappropriate on a US or Canadian resume and can get it discarded.

Match the eligibility criteria exactly — degree, stream, graduation year, CGPA cut-off and backlog rules — because the first screen is mechanical. Use the exact technology names from the posting rather than synonyms. Keep the format extremely plain: single column, standard headings, no graphics, tables or text boxes. Make sure marks, dates and any gaps match precisely what you enter in the application form, because mismatches are a very common rejection cause at this stage.

Write your headline as a job title plus your stack rather than a slogan, and keep the key skills list accurate and current since recruiter searches match on it directly. Fill in notice period, current and expected CTC, and location preference truthfully — recruiters filter on all four. Update your profile regularly, because Naukri surfaces recently active profiles more prominently and a stale profile signals you are not actively looking. Make sure your uploaded resume matches your profile; contradictions get flagged.

For experienced roles in India, yes — recruiters filter on it early and it is genuinely one of the first things they check. State it plainly, and if it is negotiable or you are on a shorter notice, say so, because that is a real advantage in a competitive shortlist. This is India-specific: do not carry it over to resumes for US, UK, Canadian or Australian applications, where it belongs in conversation rather than on the document.
