US Resume Format — How to Write an American Resume

A US resume is one to two pages, has no photo and no personal details such as date of birth or marital status, and leads with achievements rather than duties. It is called a resume, not a CV. This guide covers the standard American format, what US Applicant Tracking Systems parse cleanly, the keywords that matter by role, and role-specific guidance for software engineers, data scientists, product managers, marketing managers, full stack developers, cloud architects, executives, career changers and freshers.

The US resume standard

American resumes follow a tighter convention than most markets, and deviating from it reads as unfamiliarity with the market.

Rule US standard
Name Resume — not CV. A "CV" in the US means an academic document for research and faculty roles
Length One page for under ~10 years' experience; two pages beyond that
Photo Never. A photo creates bias-liability concerns and is routinely screened out
Personal details No date of birth, marital status, nationality, gender or headshot
Address City and state only — full street address is unnecessary and dated
Opening A short professional summary. Objective statements are outdated
Body Achievements with numbers, not duty lists
Order Summary → Experience → Skills → Education (Education first only for freshers)
References Omit entirely. "References available on request" wastes a line

What US ATS platforms need

Most large US employers run Workday, Greenhouse, iCIMS, Ashby or Lever. All of them parse text, not layout — which is why visually elaborate templates fail.

  • Single column. Two-column layouts scramble reading order in most parsers
  • No text boxes, tables, headers or footers for content — parsers frequently skip them
  • Standard section headings — "Experience", not "Where I've Made an Impact"
  • Standard fonts, black text, no icons or graphics for meaning
  • Dates as MM/YYYY, consistently
  • .docx or a text-based PDF — never a scanned or image-based PDF

Resume keywords that matter in the US

US ATS screening is keyword-driven, but the keywords must be real and defensible. Pull them from the job description itself: the exact tool names, methodologies and certifications the posting lists. If a posting says "CI/CD", write "CI/CD" — not "continuous deployment pipelines". Match the employer's vocabulary, then be ready to speak to every term in the interview.

Role-specific guidance

Software engineer — Lead with languages, frameworks and cloud platforms in a Skills block, then quantify: throughput, latency, scale, uptime. Name the systems you owned, not the team's.

Data scientist — Separate Languages/Libraries from Techniques. State the business outcome of each model, not just its accuracy. Include deployment, not only notebooks.

Full stack developer — Show both halves explicitly. Recruiters screen for evidence you have shipped on both front end and back end, not a claim.

Cloud architect — Certifications matter here more than most roles (AWS/Azure/GCP). Quantify cost savings, migration scale and availability targets.

Product manager — Metrics move you forward: adoption, retention, revenue impact. Show discovery-to-launch ownership and cross-functional scope, not a feature list.

Marketing manager — Numbers throughout: pipeline, CAC, conversion, channel growth. Name the stack (HubSpot, Marketo, GA4).

Executive — Two pages is right. Lead with scope: P&L owned, headcount, markets. Board and investor exposure belongs near the top.

Career changer — Put a targeted summary first, then a Relevant Experience section that reframes prior work against the new field. Transferable achievements, not a chronology apology.

Fresher / new graduate — Education first, then internships, projects and coursework framed as achievements. One page, no exceptions.

Frequently asked questions

One page if you have under roughly ten years of experience — this is a genuine convention in the US, not a preference, and recruiters notice. Two pages are acceptable for senior and executive candidates with substantial scope to show. Never pad to reach two pages, and never shrink margins or font size below readable to squeeze onto one; both are obvious and count against you.

No, never. In the United States a photo creates bias-liability concerns for employers, and many companies have policies requiring resumes with photos to be discarded or anonymised before review. The same applies to date of birth, marital status, nationality and gender — none of these belong on a US resume, even though several are conventional in other markets.

In the US they are different documents. A resume is a concise one-to-two page achievement-focused summary used for essentially all industry jobs. A CV is a long, comprehensive academic document listing publications, research, grants and teaching, used for faculty, research and some medical roles. If you are applying to a company, you want a resume — sending an academic CV signals you have misread the market.

Take them from the job description itself, using the employer's exact vocabulary — if the posting says CI/CD, write CI/CD rather than 'continuous deployment pipelines'. Include the specific tools, languages, frameworks, methodologies and certifications named in the posting, but only ones you can genuinely defend in an interview. Keyword stuffing skills you do not have clears the screen and then fails the technical conversation.

Use a single-column layout, standard section headings such as Experience and Skills, standard fonts, and MM/YYYY date formatting. Avoid text boxes, tables, headers and footers for real content — Workday, Greenhouse, iCIMS, Ashby and Lever frequently skip them. Submit a .docx or text-based PDF, never a scanned image. Drivetube's templates were tested across 50+ real ATS platforms precisely because most freely available templates fail these rules.
